Digital Storytelling

Multimedia in the classroom can inspire students to achieve at higher levels as well as change the dynamics for teaching and learning in the classroom. The use of multimedia programs open many doors for using multimedia with students. They not only learn first hand how to operate technological equipment but also can enhance other skills such as scriptwriting, creativity, planning, storyboarding, photography, videography and many others. Through these opportunities, students are introduced to a whole new world of communication. By using authentic products such as podcasts, video production, web page production, and others, students are given a creative outlet to communicate thoughts and new knowledge.

  1. I have enjoyed using multimedia tools personally and in the classroom. I teach how to make movies using multimedia tools. I could see myself using digital storytelling teaching English. An example would be if I was teaching Shakespeare- I could show pictures of him and the theaters he built and I could show some characters from his plays and the movies that have been made from his plays.

Students get interested when they have something flashy to look at and listen to.

  2. I have used digital storytelling with my children. We could use it in a classroom to retell a narrative or tell about a place or area of study. I think that it is also a great way to present a documentary. Digital storytelling could also be used for group projects where students could create a story together and make it into a movie.

  3. I have been using Sibelius 5 to arrange percussion music for my high school percussion section. I have utilized the "extract audio" portion of sibelius, which gives my students and auditory example of how the music is approached and played. This is especially beneficial in the instance of having mulitple bass drum lines.

  4. I enjoy using multimedia tools in my classroom. Although it takes work, the outcomes have always exceeded my expectations. My students are actively engaged in the activity, and they are better able to recall the information I taught them. To me, the biggest change I noticed was that they put more effort into their work when they make something rather than putting it on a test or worksheet.

I have enjoyed using multimedia tools in the classroom and my students have enjoyed using them as well. I feel each day when they enter the classroom they are wondering what we will use or what I will use to show them a new concept. I could see my myself using digital storytelling with my students as one of the boxes they can choose from on a tic-tac-toe activity or an assessment to show me they have mastered a standard.
